Andy Burnham Biography
Andy Burnham is a British Labour politician who served three terms as Mayor of Greater Manchester before returning to Parliament in 2026 as MP for Makerfi
Early life and backgroundAndy Burnham was born Andrew Murray Burnham on 7 January 1970 in Aintree, Lancashire, and grew up in Golborne and Culcheth in Greater Manchester. He attended St Lewis Catholic Primary School and St Aelred’s Roman Catholic High School in Newton-le-Willows. He went on to Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge, where he took a Bachelor of Arts in English and later earned a Master of Arts in the same subject.
Burnham has described his identity in layered terms—British first, north westerner second, Liverpudlian third and English fourth—reflecting both family background and regional ties. His parents were Kenneth Roy Burnham, a telephone engineer, and Eileen Mary Burnham, who worked as a receptionist. He has a brother, Nick Burnham.
Career
Burnham’s involvement in politics began as a teenager when he joined the Labour Party. He worked as a political researcher in the mid-1990s and held roles with trade unions and government advisory bodies before entering Parliament. In 2001 he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Leigh with a substantial majority, and he made his maiden speech in July of that year.
During the 2000s Burnham held a succession of government and shadow posts. He served on the Health Select Committee, worked as Parliamentary Private Secretary to senior ministers, and after the 2005 election moved into ministerial ranks. Gordon Brown brought him into the cabinet in 2007 as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Subsequent appointments included Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and, from 2009, Secretary of State for Health.
After Labour’s defeat in 2010 Burnham served in shadow cabinet roles, including Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Shadow Secretary of State for Education, and twice stood in Labour leadership contests, finishing fourth in 2010 and runner-up in 2015. He was Shadow Home Secretary in 2015–2016.
In 2017 Burnham left Parliament to stand in the inaugural Greater Manchester mayoral election. He won and became the region’s first elected mayor, returning to office in 2021 and again in 2024 for a third term under a first‑past‑the‑post system. As mayor he focused on issues such as homelessness, affordable housing, public transport, social care, mental health provision and tackling regional inequalities. He also challenged national government funding arrangements for Greater Manchester during the COVID‑19 pandemic.
Return to Parliament and recent political moves
A by‑election in Makerfield in June 2026 brought Burnham back to Westminster. He was Labour’s sole shortlisted candidate for that contest, campaigned under the slogan “Andy—For us,” and secured 54.8% of the vote. He resigned the mayoralty because holding both offices is not permitted under UK law and took the oath as a Member of Parliament on 22 June 2026.
On the same day, with the Labour leader announcing his intention to step down once a successor is chosen, Burnham declared his candidacy for the Labour leadership contest.
Public profile
Burnham’s public profile has combined national ministerial experience with a strong regional base in the north west. After becoming mayor he was widely discussed as a potential future Labour leader and in 2023 was placed on the New Statesman Left Power List. His campaigning has sometimes drawn on local culture and music: during the 2026 Makerfield campaign he used a cartoon image of himself in materials and obtained permission to use an Oasis track.
Outside politics
Sport has been a consistent interest. Burnham played cricket and football while at university and is a long‑standing Everton supporter. He has also been involved with rugby league in Greater Manchester, holding honorary roles with the Leigh Leopards.
Personal life
Burnham married Marie‑France van Heel, a Dutch‑born businesswoman, in 2000; the couple met at university. They have three children, including a son, Jimmy, and two daughters, Rosie and Annie. Burnham identifies as a Christian.
