Early life and background

Anees Ahmed Abdul Hameed Bazmee was born on 1 November 1962 in Modasa, Gujarat, and grew up in a family that moved to Mumbai when he was very young. His father, Abdul Hameed Bazmee, was an Urdu poet and also worked in construction; Anees spent time around his father’s poetic circle and has said those early encounters helped shape his interest in writing. He attended Farooq School in Mumbai and completed his education up to the tenth standard.

He entered the film world as a child out of necessity, making his screen debut in Kitaab (1977) and later appearing in Bhayaanak (1979) and Naseeb (1981). Although his performances were noticed, Anees decided acting was not his true calling and shifted his focus to behind-the-camera work, learning multiple crafts across departments including sound, art direction and editing.

Career

Anees moved through the industry as an assistant and apprentice, working with established filmmakers and supporting departments on a range of productions. He assisted Raj Kapoor on Prem Rog (1982) and gained early directing experience in regional cinema, including work on the Rajasthani film Mhari Pyari Chanana (1983). Over the 1980s and early 1990s he worked as an assistant director on titles such as Lava (1985), Jaanoo (1985) and Insaaf: The Final Justice (1994) and also assisted established screenwriters.

As a writer, Anees contributed scripts for many Hindi films across the 1990s and 2000s, with credits that include Swarg (1990) as a screenwriting credit listed and work on films like Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), Aankhen (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Laadla (1994), Deewana Mastana (1997), Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), Sirf Tum (1999) and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004). His first notable commercial success as a director came with Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), after which he established himself as a filmmaker of mainstream comedies and family-oriented entertainers.

He made his directorial debut with Hulchul (1995) and later reached a wider audience with large-scale hits such as No Entry (2005) and Welcome (2007). Other commercial projects include Singh Is Kinng (2008), Ready (2011) and the sequel Welcome Back (2015). In 2022 he directed Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which is noted in his filmography for its box-office performance that year.

Anees has also appeared on screen in occasional cameos, including a guest appearance in the Kannada film Care of Footpath 2 (2015). He has described a personal creative process that often begins with writing scripts in Urdu and later translating them to suit cast and crew, and he has spoken about preferring to make clean, family-oriented films.

Anees is recognised within the Indian film industry for his work in comedy and for directing crowd-pleasing entertainers.
