Early life and background

Angad Singh Saini was born on 23 October 1990 in Amritsar, Punjab, and grew up in Nawanshahr. He attended Yadavindra Public School in Mohali and Bishop Cotton School in Shimla before completing a Bachelor of Business Administration at Maharaja Agrasen University in Himachal Pradesh. He comes from a politically active family: his grandfather and father both served in local politics, and other relatives have been involved in regional public life.

Career

Angad Singh entered active politics as a youth leader. At age 18 he won the post of general secretary of the District Youth Congress in Nawanshahr, and by 21 he became president of the Nawanshahr Youth Congress. He contested the 2017 Punjab Assembly election as an Indian National Congress candidate and won the Nawanshahr seat, becoming one of the youngest MLAs in the state at 26.

During his political journey he briefly left the Congress in January 2022 and ran as an independent candidate in the 2022 Assembly election, which he did not win. He rejoined the Congress party in May 2022. His responsibilities and public work have intersected with business and agriculture, and he is described as a politician, businessman and agriculturist.

Public profile

Angad Singh has maintained a visible local profile through both political activity and community initiatives. He has been involved in projects focused on education, infrastructure and sports in Nawanshahr: establishing improved school facilities, bringing parks and laboratories to local schools, setting up gyms in villages, and organizing sports tournaments that drew wide participation. Under his leadership, Nawanshahr received recognition as the best Self Sustainable City in the North Zone at a national event in November 2021.

His engagement with farmers included distributing funds under a debt relief scheme in 2021. He has also contributed to construction projects such as roads, hospitals and a gaushala. Sports are a significant personal and public interest; he is a national-level squash player and shooter and has distributed sporting equipment and uniforms to local teams and schools.

Angad has also been active in political campaigning beyond the state: in 2016 he organised a rally in San Francisco that attracted a large expatriate attendance. His public record includes at least one electoral controversy: in January 2022 he received show-cause notices from election authorities for distributing goods bearing his stickers during a period when the Model Code of Conduct applied.

Personal life

Angad Singh comes from a family with a long record in regional politics. His father, Parkash Singh, was active in local politics until his death in 2010; his mother, Guriqbal Kaur, is also politically involved. He lists several relatives in public life, including an uncle who is a politician.

He married Aditi Singh in November 2019; the marriage ceremonies were held according to Hindu and Sikh traditions on consecutive days. The couple divorced in 2023. Angad is reported to have three sisters.

He is identified with the Sikh faith. Outside politics he is known to enjoy travel and collecting watches. He owns a Toyota Fortuner and has participated in organizing large community sporting events.

Incidents and controversies

In April 2024 Angad Singh was involved in a traffic accident when his car collided with an ambulance that had reportedly stopped on the road; he was taken to hospital. Earlier, in 2018 he raised allegations about a physical assault related to local electoral activity. The show-cause notices issued in 2022 for distributing goods during the Model Code of Conduct are a documented electoral compliance issue.

Latest updates

After the 2022 election cycle he returned to the Indian National Congress. The most recent publicly noted incident is the April 2024 road crash in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, from which he was hospitalized.

Angad Singh continues to be active in local development initiatives, sports promotion and party politics in Punjab.
