Early life and background

Angad Vir Singh Bajwa was born on 29 November 1995 in Chandigarh. Raised in a family with roots in the city, he attended Sherwood College in Nainital for his schooling and later studied at Manav Rachna University in Chandigarh. He also enrolled at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver for higher studies but did not complete that program.

Angad’s father is Gurpal Singh Bajwa, who is noted to run a hospitality business in Canada. Angad developed an interest in firearms and shooting as a teenager, initially trying pistol shooting before switching his focus to shotgun skeet, which he found more engaging.

Career

Angad made his mark early in skeet shooting. While studying in Canada he represented the University of British Columbia and became the youngest Canadian Open champion in 2014. After returning to India to continue his education and concentrate on shooting, he accumulated a string of national and international results across junior and senior levels.

His medal record includes gold medals at the 2015 Asian Shooting Championship (individual junior skeet and junior team skeet) in Kuwait City, the 2018 National Shooting Championship, and podium finishes at multiple ISSF World Cup events in 2021 in Delhi across skeet team and mixed team categories. He won a bronze at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples in the men’s skeet and added team and continental medals at Asian-level events in 2019 and 2023. He is credited with a perfect 60/60 world record performance in men’s skeet at the Asian Shotgun Championship in Kuwait City.

Angad has trained under prominent coaches, including Vincent Hancock and Tore Brovold, and has worked with national coach Jitinder Beniwal. He trains right-handed and uses his right eye as his dominant shooting eye. His main events are men’s skeet, mixed team skeet, and men’s skeet team.

In 2019 he claimed the National Shotgun Championship title, and in 2021 he secured an Olympic quota spot to represent India in skeet at the Tokyo Olympics (the Games originally scheduled for 2020 and held in 2021). During the COVID-19 pandemic he maintained fitness and practice by training at a private outdoor range located at his farmhouse in Dera Bassi, Chandigarh.

Public profile

Angad stands about 1.70 m (5 feet 7 inches) and maintains a competitive weight near 70 kg (approximately 154 lbs). He is described as having black hair and black eyes. Off the range he is a fitness enthusiast who regularly visits the gym and enjoys playing squash. He is also an animal lover and keeps two pet dogs.

Angad is unmarried. He credits family support—particularly from his father—for enabling him to pursue shooting. He has spoken about managing pressure and the mental aspects of elite competition, citing advice from his coaches on staying calm during high-stakes events.

Notable associations and recognition

Angad has trained internationally and benefited from coaching by Olympic medallists and world-class shooters. His performances have drawn attention within Indian sporting circles; a public note of encouragement from actor Amitabh Bachchan referenced a family connection through Sherwood College, where Angad’s father was a classmate of the actor.

Latest updates

In recent years Angad continued to compete on the international circuit, contributing to team medals at ISSF World Cups and Asian-level competitions. He prepared for major events despite pandemic-related disruptions by utilizing his home training facilities and focusing on fitness and technique. His immediate aims have included maintaining consistency in trials and pursuing quota opportunities for major championships.

Angad remains an active member of India’s skeet squad, balancing training, competition and fitness as he builds on a record that includes national titles, continental honours and an Asian-level world-record performance.
