Angela Nikolau Biography

Angelina "Angela" Nikolau was born on 24 June 1993 in Moscow, Russia. She grew up in a family with roots in the circus; her father, Dmitriy Nikolau, performed professionally.

Early life and background

Angelina "Angela" Nikolau was born on 24 June 1993 in Moscow, Russia. She grew up in a family with roots in the circus; her father, Dmitriy Nikolau, performed professionally. That upbringing exposed her early to physical training and performing arts. As a child she trained in rhythmic gymnastics, ballet and tumbling, disciplines she continued into her teens and which she credits with building the strength, balance and flexibility used in her later rooftop work.

Angela attended public schools in her early years and later enrolled in a Christian School of Arts. At sixteen she began teaching art to children. After finishing secondary education she joined the Russian State Specialized Academy of Arts in Moscow. She studied there for five years but left during her final year to pursue rooftopping and photography full time. She also completed additional training as a traditional fine artist and taught art briefly before moving into adventure photography.

Career

Nikolau’s career grew from photographing city rooftops in Moscow to traveling internationally to capture images and footage from the tops of skyscrapers, construction cranes and other urban structures. She rose to prominence by posting daring rooftop selfies and videos on social media, often without safety equipment, and amassed a large following on platforms such as Instagram.

Early public attention included a newspaper feature in 2014. In 2015 she was questioned as a witness in an investigation involving other rooftoppers. In 2016 Nikolau and fellow rooftopper Ivan Beerkus traveled to China and climbed Goldin Finance 117 in Tianjin while it was under construction; footage from that climb received widespread attention. That same year she climbed the Ping An Finance Centre in Shenzhen and produced images that circulated widely online.

In 2017 she was the lead subject in the Danish documentary On the Edge of Freedom, and in 2018 she appeared in the Slovak documentary Who is Next?. Beyond documentaries, her rooftop imagery and public profile have led to commercial work, including appearances in brand advertisements.

Nikolau expanded her creative output by turning her high-altitude photographs into one-of-one NFT artworks. Her pieces were included in the 2022 NFT Yearbook and sold on platforms such as SuperRare under titles like Sanctuary and Above Stillness.

In 2024 she and Ivan Beerkus were featured in the Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film profiles their relationship, mental health experiences, and the preparations they used to access high-security areas.

Public profile

Angela is known for describing her rooftop practice as a blend of performance art and visual storytelling rather than simply dangerous stunts. Her signature work involves climbing to exposed edges of buildings without ropes or harnesses to create striking photographs and videos.

She has been photographed and reported on by international news outlets for several of her climbs. In 2022 she and Beerkus entered and climbed Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur without permission; the climb became a major part of their documentary coverage and the Instagram video of that ascent received millions of views. Her social media portfolio also features personal interests such as travel, swimming, reading and dance, and she shares photos of her pet cat.

Controversies and legal matters

Angela Nikolau’s rooftop activities have sometimes intersected with law enforcement. On 1 July 2026 she and partner Ivan Beerkus climbed the 1,454-foot antenna spire of the Empire State Building in New York City without authorization. The pair stayed inside the building overnight, bypassed security, and ascended the exterior antenna. At the top they displayed a large banner and, during the descent, Beerkus proposed to Nikolau on a small platform; she accepted and the engagement was photographed.

Responders deactivated a high-voltage broadcast antenna to bring them down safely. Both were arrested by the New York Police Department and charged with multiple offenses, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. They were released under court supervision and ordered to appear in court on 24 August 2026.

As of the last update, Angela Nikolau continues to be a prominent figure in the rooftopping and adventure photography communities, combining performance, visual art and viral online content.
