Early life and backgroundAngelo Davis Mathews was born on 2 June 1987 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He attended St. Joseph’s College in Colombo and came through that school’s age-group teams, representing the institution at under-13, under-15, under-16, under-17 and under-19 levels. As a youth he combined athletics and cricket, competing in hurdles and sprint events before focusing on cricket full time. His father, Tyronne Mathews, worked as a cricket coach, and his family background has been described with varying accounts of ethnic origins within Sri Lanka.
Career
Mathews is a right-handed batter and a right-arm medium pace bowler whose professional career began in domestic cricket with Colts Cricket Club. He made his List A, T20 and first-class debuts in the mid-2000s and progressed through Sri Lanka’s representative pathway, appearing for the country at under-15, under-17, under-19 and under-23 levels before moving into Sri Lanka A and the senior national side.
He debuted in One-Day Internationals on 28 November 2008 against Zimbabwe, in T20 internationals on 8 June 2009 against Australia, and in Test cricket on 4 July 2009 against Pakistan. Mathews captained the Sri Lanka Under-19 side at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup and went on to captain Sri Lanka across formats, becoming the country’s youngest-ever Test captain at age 25 in February 2013. He has had multiple stints as Sri Lanka’s captain in T20, ODI and Test cricket and stepped down from the captaincy in July 2017, later returning to lead limited-overs sides for part of 2018.
Across a career stretching more than a decade, Mathews has compiled notable batting and bowling performances. He recorded his first Test fifty in July 2009 and his maiden Test century in September 2011. He converted to a double century in January 2020 with an unbeaten 200 against Zimbabwe. He reached the milestone of 100 Test matches in July 2022 and is one of Sri Lanka’s leading six-hitters in the format.
In ODIs he registered his first half-century in January 2009, took a six-wicket haul against India in September 2009, and scored his maiden ODI century in November 2014 with an unbeaten 139 against India. Mathews has been a regular participant across multiple ICC events, contributing with both bat and ball in World Cups and T20 tournaments over the years, including Sri Lanka’s victorious 2014 T20 World Cup campaign.
At domestic and franchise level he has represented numerous teams: Colts Cricket Club, various provincial sides, and overseas clubs in competitions such as the Indian Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, Dhaka Premier Division, Abu Dhabi T10 League and the Lanka Premier League. In franchise cricket he has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils, Comilla Victorians and others. In 2023 he captained B-Love Kandy to the Lanka Premier League title.
Records and honours
Mathews’s career contains several records and honours. He holds the record for the fastest Sri Lankan fifty in an ODI World Cup (20 balls) and shared a record ninth-wicket ODI partnership with Lasith Malinga. He was the first international cricketer to be dismissed timed out in November 2023. He was named in the ICC Test Team of the Year as captain of the 2014 side, was included in year-end XIs by cricket media, and received Wisden recognition in 2015. His individual awards include national Cricketer of the Year honours; he was also ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May 2022.
