Early life and background

Anil Kumar Gochikar was born on 7 June 1978 and raised in Harchandi Sahi, Puri, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. He comes from a family with long-standing ties to the Jagannath Temple in Puri; several generations of his family have served as temple servitors. His father, Harihar Gochhikar, ran a hotel in Puri and passed away in 2006, after which Anil and his brother assumed greater family responsibilities.

Anil studied law, a decision reportedly influenced by a family property dispute that followed his father’s death. He also trained in akharas during his youth, a traditional form of physical training that complemented his later bodybuilding pursuits.

Anil Gochikar established himself as a competitive bodybuilder after beginning focused gym work around 2009. His older brother, Damodar (also known as Sunil) Gochhikar, a national-level bodybuilder, played a central role in his development—opening a local gym in Puri where Anil honed his technique and conditioning. He first entered organized competition in 2012, winning gold at the Mr. Odisha 50th Senior State Body Building Championship. That year also brought regional success: he earned the title of Champion of Champions in the 70 kg division at the 12th Eastern & North Eastern India Bodybuilding Championship held in Bhubaneswar. Between 2012 and 2014, Anil captured consecutive national-level golds at the Mr. India bodybuilding competition.
