Early life and background
Anil Kumar Lahoti was born on 20 August 1963 in Kusmoda, Guna, Madhya Pradesh. He completed his schooling at Government Higher Secondary School in Guna and went on to study civil engineering at the Madhav Institute of Technology & Science in Gwalior, where he earned a B.E. He later completed an M.E. in Structural Engineering at IIT Roorkee (then University of Roorkee).

He joined the Indian Railway Service of Engineers after clearing the IES examination in 1984 and is a member of the 1984 IRMS/IRSE batch. Over the years he has attended executive and leadership programmes at institutions including the Indian School of Business (Strategic Management), Bocconi School of Management (Executive Leadership), and Carnegie Mellon University (Advanced Leadership and Strategic Management). Official assignments have taken him to a number of countries including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Hong Kong, Japan and China.

Lahoti’s career spans technical engineering roles and senior administrative appointments across the Indian Railways. He later served as Officer on Special Duty to the Member Engineering of the Railway Board and as Divisional Railway Manager for Northern Railway at Lucknow from February 2015 to April 2017.

In 2017 he held brief tenures as Chief Bridge Engineer for Northern Railway and as Executive Director Civil Engineering (Planning) at the Ministry of Railways in New Delhi. He moved on to become Principal Chief Engineer of North Central Railway in Prayagraj (November 2018–March 2019) and then Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) for Northern Railway from March 2019 to July 2021.

From July 2021 until December 2022 he was General Manager of Central Railway, and between February and December 2022 he also held additional charge as General Manager of Western Railway. On 1 January 2023 he assumed the office of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board at the Ministry of Railways.

Throughout his appointments Lahoti has been involved in major infrastructure projects: planning and execution of new lines, doubling, yard remodelling and bridge works; development and commercial use of land and air space at New Delhi station; creating a new directional terminal at Anand Vihar; and enabling a second entry to New Delhi station to reduce crowding. As Divisional Railway Manager in Lucknow he pursued measures to improve freight movement on alternative routes. During his tenure with Central Railway he oversaw commissioning of infrastructure works including the 5th and 6th lines between Diva and Thane in Mumbai and addressed expansion of air-conditioned suburban services. The Ministry credits him with helping achieve record freight and parcel tonnage and revenue, and with running a high number of Kissan Rails while he led Central Railway.
