Early life and background

Anita Kotwani was born and raised in Mumbai and completed her higher education there, earning a Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) from Government Law College, Mumbai, after earlier completing a B.Com (Hons). She played tennis during her college years. Known familiarly as Anu, she comes from a family in Mumbai; her father is Jhamatmal Kotwani and she has siblings who are active in business and entrepreneurship.

Career

Kotwani began her career in Mumbai with Stratagem Media and moved into a senior media planning role at the Dainik Bhaskar Group in October 1999. In that position she worked on expanding the publisher's presence into new regional markets, supporting sales strategy, analyzing data and helping train the sales team to meet targets.

In October 2000 she joined Lintas Media Group (then Initiative Media) as a director and spent several years managing category businesses including hair oil and oral care for national brands. She later worked on new business development within SSC&B Lintas.

In June 2004 Kotwani moved to Mindshare, where she led client leadership for the West zone. Over a 13-year period she focused on strengthening client relationships and contributing to the agency's strategic work; Mindshare earned industry recognition during her tenure, including the Campaign India-South Asia Engagement/Strategy Planner of the Year award in 2015 and a Media Agency of the Year award at the Dainik Bhaskar Awards in 2016. In April 2018 she was appointed Senior Vice President, New Business at Mindshare India and held that role until May 2020. In 2019 she was part of the team awarded Campaign Asia-Pacific’s New Business Development Team of the Year (South Asia) for Mindshare India.

From June 2020 until March 2023 Kotwani served as Chief Executive Officer of Carat India, a prominent media and marketing agency. In March 2023 she was appointed CEO of Media South Asia at Dentsu India, responsible for overseeing the network’s media businesses across South Asia, including Carat, iProspect, Dentsu X, Posterscope and the media investment arm Amplifi. She succeeded Divya Karani in that role.

Industry recognition and contributions

Kotwani’s work has been recognized with a number of industry honours. She received the South Asia Agency Head of the Year title at Campaign Asia in 2022 and was named a L’Oréal Paris Super Achiever – Wonder Woman in 2023. She has appeared on Impact magazine’s list of influential women in media, marketing and advertising, ranking among the publication’s top 50 in 2019 and 2022. Other acknowledgements include an award in a ‘Women To Watch Out For’ category.

Beyond her executive responsibilities, Kotwani has served on juries for a range of media and creative industry awards, including EMVIEs, Goafest, Kyoorius Awards and the Media ABBY Awards, where she chaired the jury for two consecutive years.
