Early life and backgroundMidhun Mohan, popularly known as Aniyan Midhun, was born on 18 June 1992 in Nattika, Kerala, and grew up in a coastal setting where his family earned a living from fishing and small-scale cultivation. He spent much of his childhood on the beach and developed an early affinity for the sea, a connection that has influenced the nickname he is sometimes given: "Son of the Arabian Sea." His parents are Mohan, a fisherman, and Ponnamma. He has a sister named Gopika, who works as a physiotherapist.
Midhun attended Bharath Vidya Mandir English School in Valapad and V.P.M.S.N.D.P. Higher Secondary School in Kazhimbram. He later completed a B.Sc. in Multimedia from ICAT Design and Media College in Bangalore. Growing up in a village with limited sporting infrastructure shaped his early training routine: he and a friend practiced on the beach, and he helped support his training expenses through farming, fishing and selling bananas.
Career
Aniyan Midhun began his martial arts journey with karate in primary school, earning a black belt before moving on to kickboxing and eventually Wushu by around class 7. He became a national kickboxing champion in 2015 while competing for the Indian Association of Kickboxing and later fought as a pro in KAKO (Keranadu Association of Kickboxing Organizations).
In 2010, after beginning his college education, he committed to professional Wushu training and relocated to Jammu and Kashmir to work with coach Kuldeep Kumar Handoo, an Arjuna Award recipient. Training in Kashmir—often at altitude and in mountainous conditions—became a regular part of his preparation and helped him develop endurance, speed and strength needed for sanda competition.
Aniyan made his Wushu debut at the South Asian Wushu Championship in Nepal on 31 March 2021 in the 70 kg category and won the gold medal at that event. He went on to claim additional international success, including a gold at the World Pro Wushu Sanda Fight in Thailand in 2022 and being described in the excerpt as a 2022 World Champion in Wushu Sanda. His achievements have been recognized with awards such as Best Athlete of the Year (2021), a Government of Nepal honor in 2021, and other distinctions listed for 2022.
