Anjana Mumtaz was born on 4 January 1941 in Bombay (now Mumbai). Raised in the city where she later built her career, she completed her formal schooling up to the tenth grade. From an early age she was drawn to dance; her mother engaged a private teacher to train her, and she later studied kathak under the dancer Gopi Krishan.

Career

Anjana entered the film industry as a young performer and made her screen debut in the 1969 film Sumbundh. That first release brought her attention and led to more offers, including larger projects where she was cast in leading parts. Over the decades she worked in a wide variety of films in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati cinema.

In the 1970s and 1980s she appeared in notable productions that contributed to her recognition, and by the 1990s she was widely cast in maternal and supporting roles in mainstream Hindi films. Her filmography includes roles in Bandhe Haath (1973), Sati Naag Kanya (1983) and Dil Hi To Hai (1992), among many others across a career that spans hundreds of movies.
