Early life and background

Ankita Bhakat was born on 17 June 1998 in Sithi More near Baranagar, Kolkata. Raised in a family where her father, Shantanu Bhakat, worked as a milkman, she developed an early interest in archery after seeing a local tournament at Kolkata’s Circus Maidan when she was about ten. Her family could not afford personal equipment at first, so Ankita practised using gear borrowed from other club members until she secured formal training.

In 2014 she moved to the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur to pursue professional coaching. At the academy she trained under Dharmendra Tiwari, Purnima Mahato and Ram Awdesh, an environment that prepared her for national selection and international competition.

Career

Bhakat came through national trials to earn a place on India’s team for the 2015 World Archery Youth Championships. Earlier that year she won bronze in the girls’ individual recurve and silver in the girls’ recurve team event at the Seoul International Youth Archery Festa. Her youth results included a standout performance at the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships in Rosario, where she partnered with Jemson Singh Ningthoujam to win gold in the recurve junior mixed team event — a title that was significant for India’s youth archery programme.

On the senior circuit, Ankita has been active in World Cup stages and continental tournaments. She reached strong qualification scores at the 2018 Archery World Cup and advanced through head-to-head rounds in individual, team and mixed events across World Cup stages in 2018. In team competition she has paired with leading Indian archers including Promila Daimary, Deepika Kumari, Atanu Das and others.

Her results across 2017–2023 record a mix of individual and team podium finishes. In 2017 she earned bronze in the mixed team at the Asia Cup Stage 3. In 2021 she was part of the Indian women’s recurve trio that won gold at a World Cup stage in Guatemala. Nationally, Ankita won the individual recurve title at the National Archery Ranking Tournament in January 2022 and claimed a silver at the 43rd NTPC Senior National Championship in March 2023. She also won the maiden Khelo India Women National Ranking Archery Tournament in April 2022, taking the gold and the associated prize money.

On the international podium, Ankita and teammates secured a silver medal in the women’s recurve team at the Paris Archery World Cup Stage 3 in 2022. In August 2023, the Indian recurve women’s team that included Ankita won bronze at the Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Paris, and in October 2023 she won a bronze medal in the women’s recurve event at the Asian Games held in Hangzhou.
