Early life and background

Gagandeep Kaur Maan, known professionally as Anmol Gagan Maan, was born on 26 February 1990 in Khilan Pind, Mansa, Punjab. Raised in the region, she later made Mohali her hometown. She completed undergraduate studies in psychology and music at M.C.M. D.A.V. College in Chandigarh. Maan grew up in a Sikh household and is identified with the Jatt community.

She developed an early interest in performance arts, training in traditional Punjabi dance forms including Bhangra, Giddha and Jhumar. As a youth she competed internationally in folk dance, winning events in England and Russia in 2004, and she also earned recognition in inter-zonal and national singing and dance competitions. Maan is a trained tumbi player and incorporates that instrument’s sound into many of her recordings.

Career

Maan began her public career as a singer and songwriter. Her recorded debut came with the 2014 song "Royal Jatti," and she went on to release a string of popular Punjabi tracks. Her repertoire includes songs such as "Kundi Muchh," "Kala Sher," "Patandar," "Maa," "Shokeen Jatt," "Velly," "Ghant Purpose," "Patola," "Nakhro" and "Phullan Wali Gaddi." Her 2015 album "Punjabo" became one of her more notable commercial successes.

Beyond singing, Maan writes poems and composes music. She authored a book titled "How to Be Real Human" in 2013. She has also been a performer in beauty pageantry, winning the Miss Mohali Punjaban title at Miss World Punjaban in 2013.

Political life

Maan entered formal politics with the Aam Aadmi Party in 2020. She contested the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Kharar constituency on the AAP ticket and won, defeating a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate by a substantial margin. In July 2022 she was appointed as a minister in the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. During the party’s 2022 campaign she contributed artistically as well, recording a campaign song for AAP.
