Early life and background

Annabel Sutherland was born on 12 October 2001 in Melbourne, Victoria. Raised in a sporting family, she attended Methodist Ladies' College in Kew and completed a science degree. Her father, James Sutherland, is known within cricket administration circles; her mother is Heidi. She has two brothers, Will and Tom Sutherland, and spent much of her childhood playing sport alongside boys at local clubs, including Malvern Cricket Club, where she often found herself the only girl in the team.

Career

Sutherland emerged through Australia’s junior pathways, representing the country at under-15 and under-19 levels. She earned Player of the Championship honours at national age-group events, including the Under-15 National Championships and later at the Under-18 National Championship, where she scored heavily across the tournament.

She made an early impression on the domestic scene, debuting for the Melbourne Renegades as a 15-year-old and becoming the youngest player to appear in the Women’s Big Bash at that time. From 2017–18 she has been associated with Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League and with the Melbourne Stars in the WBBL. In 2022 she joined Welsh Fire for The Hundred and in 2023 she signed with the Gujarat Giants for the inaugural Women’s Premier League.
