Anoop Kumar Ganguly was an Indian film actor best known for his comic roles and as one of the three Ganguly brothers who achieved prominence in mid-20th‑c.

Early life and background

Anoop Kumar Ganguly was born Kalyan Kumar Ganguly on 9 January 1926 in Khandwa, then part of the Central Provinces and Berar in British India (now in Madhya Pradesh). He grew up in a family that produced several notable figures in Indian cinema: his elder brother Ashok Kumar became an actor and singer, and his younger brother Kishore Kumar became a celebrated playback singer. Their parents were Kunjalal (Gangopadhya) Ganguly, a lawyer, and Gouri Devi, a homemaker. The family also included a sister, Sati Devi.

Anoop pursued formal musical training in his twenties and is reported to have completed a Visharad in Music. He studied at Indore Christian College. Among his contributions to his family’s musical legacy, he is credited with teaching his younger brother Kishore Kumar certain singing techniques, including yodeling.

Career

Anoop Kumar began working in Hindi cinema in the late 1940s and made his film debut in Khiladi (1950) in a supporting part. Very early in his screen career he also played a lead in the film Gauna (1950). Through the 1950s and 1960s he built a steady career, frequently cast in light and comic roles.

A significant breakthrough came in the late 1950s. He starred in the romantic comedy Dekh Kabira Roya (1957) as a singer named Mohan, and the following year appeared in the popular family comedy Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) alongside his brothers Ashok and Kishore. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi became one of the top box-office performers of its year and raised his profile with audiences. For his work in that film he later received a Filmfare Awards nomination in the category of Best Comic Actor.

Across his career he acted in a number of well-known Hindi films, including Junglee (1951), Kashmir Ki Kali (1962), Aansoo Bane Phool, and Prem Pujari (1969). He also worked in Bengali cinema, making his Bengali-film debut in Lukochuri (1958) in a supporting role opposite Kishore Kumar.

Anoop lent his voice to a small number of film songs. Two songs he sang, "Do Dino Ki Hai Kahani" and "Allah Khair Rabba Khair," appear in the film Hum Do Daaku, a project produced by Kishore Kumar.

Television and later work

In 1990 Anoop made his television debut on Doordarshan with the detective serial Bheem Bhawani, in which he acted alongside his brother Ashok Kumar. He also appeared in television projects titled Dada Dadi Ki Kahaniya and Ek Raja Ek Rani. His last screen appearance was in the 1995 film Rock Dancer, which featured Govinda, Shammi Kapoor and Javed Jaffrey.

Anoop Kumar was widely recognized for his comic timing and for being part of the celebrated Ganguly brothers’ trio in Indian cinema. He stood approximately 175 cm tall and his appearance—dark hair and black eyes—was familiar to generations of Hindi-film audiences. He married and was a father to five children, including a son named Arjun Kumar and daughters Chandra Sanyal, Anjali Lahiri and Indrani Mukherjee.

Personal life and death

Anoop Kumar lived much of his career in Bombay (now Mumbai). He died on 20 September 1997 at Aryogyanidhi Hospital in Juhu after suffering a heart attack. He was 71 years old at the time of his passing.
