Early life and background

Anrich Arno Nortje was born on 16 November 1993 in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. He grew up in Uitenhage and attended local schools including Handhaaf Primary School, Daniel Pienaar Technical High School and Hoërskool Brandwag. Nortje went on to study at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Planning and a post-graduate diploma in the same field.

From a young age Nortje played cricket and balanced sport with academic pursuits. While at school he worked with a biokineticist, Runeshan Moodley, as part of his fitness training. An early collarbone injury sustained playing rugby in the 11th grade prompted him to focus his athletic efforts solely on cricket.

Career

Nortje is a right-arm fast bowler who bats right-handed. He made his first-class debut in 2013 for Eastern Province against Namibia in Windhoek. He has represented a number of domestic sides, including Eastern Province, the Warriors, and Cape Town Blitz. His pathway through domestic cricket included time with Madibaz Cricket Club and selection in the Eastern Province squad for the 2016 Africa T20 Cup.

Highlights from 2018 marked a period of progress for Nortje. He received the Warriors Cricket Award for Most Promising Player of the Year and was picked for Cape Town Blitz for the inaugural Mzansi Super League T20 tournament. That year he also toured India with South Africa A and took part in one four-day game on that trip. In November 2018 a tournament ankle injury caused him to leave the Mzansi Super League before its conclusion.

Later in 2018 Nortje entered the Indian Premier League auction, where Kolkata Knight Riders purchased him at the base price of ₹20 lakh for the 2019 season. Domestically he has worn the jersey number 2.

Public profile

Nortje stands about 1.83 m tall and his listed playing weight is around 80 kg. Physical measurements reported in public profiles include a 40-inch chest and 32-inch waist. His eyes are described as grey and his hair as blond. On the field he is known for his pace bowling and has cited South African fast bowlers among his cricketing favourites.

Off the field he follows Christianity, enjoys travelling and listening to music, and is a non-vegetarian. Personal details shared publicly include that he is engaged to Micaela Kleu, who works as a teacher. His mother is Amanda Nortje; he also has an elder brother, Anton Nortje, and a sister, Lizel Bouwer.

Latest updates

As of 2018 and into 2019, Nortje's career included appearances in domestic competitions, selection for South Africa A, and entry into the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders. He sustained an ankle injury during the 2018 Mzansi Super League which interrupted his participation in that tournament.

Career outlook

Nortje's background combines formal training in financial planning with a steady rise through provincial and franchise cricket. Awards such as the Warriors' Most Promising Player of the Year in 2018 and participation in franchise leagues reflect his emergence as a notable fast-bowling prospect from the Eastern Cape.
