Early life and background

Antara Nandy was born on 11 December 1999 in Sivasagar, Assam. She grew up in a musical household and began singing very young; her parents moved to Kolkata to support her musical training. Antara started formal lessons in Hindustani classical music around the age of four and a half, studying under Ustad Rashid Khan in Kolkata.

She attended Budding Buds School in Tinsukia and later Delhi Public School, Ruby Park in Kolkata. For higher education she studied mass communication at Symbiosis Centre for Media & Communication affiliated with Pune University and went on to pursue a Master of Arts in Music.

Career

Antara first came to public attention as a child contestant on the reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs in 2009, where she finished among the top three finalists. Soon after, she recorded regional music albums, including an Assamese album released in 2010 and subsequent Bengali and Assamese projects in the early 2010s.

Her adolescence brought challenges: Antara has said her voice changed around puberty, which affected her trajectory for a time, but she continued training and performing. She later studied at KM College of Music & Technology in Chennai, where work she presented attracted praise from the college founder, A. R. Rahman.

During her undergraduate years she completed internships with digital and media companies, and in 2019 she appeared on the YouTube talent-hunt series ARRived. That appearance led to an opportunity to record with A. R. Rahman's studio, and she contributed vocals to the song Nis Din from the show Jammin.

In 2020, together with her younger sister Ankita, Antara launched a Balcony Concerts playlist on YouTube during the nationwide lockdown. The series showcased creative home-made percussion and household-object rhythms and drew viral attention on social media. Around the same period she recorded a number of regional songs across languages, including Bengali and Maithili releases in 2020.

Antara's first credited film playback appearance came in 2022 when she sang the Tamil song Alaikadel for the film Ponniyin Selvan: I. The recording was completed earlier, and in September 2022 she learned the track had been selected for the film. She also recorded Telugu, Kannada and Hindi versions of the same song.
