Early life and backgroundAnthony Michael Bourdain was born on June 25, 1956, in New York City. Raised in that city, he attended Dwight-Englewood School before pursuing higher education at Vassar College and later the Culinary Institute of America, from which he graduated in 1978. His parents were Pierre and Gladys Bourdain; his father worked in the classical music industry and his mother held an editorial role at The New York Times. Bourdain grew up in a household that exposed him to culture and food, and an early culinary experience on a vacation in France helped shape his future career.
Career
Bourdain trained and worked in a number of restaurants in and around New York City during the 1980s and 1990s. He gained experience in seafood kitchens in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and later worked at Manhattan restaurants such as Supper Club, Sullivan’s and One Fifth Avenue. In 1998 he became executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in Manhattan, a post he held until the restaurant ultimately closed in 2017.
He first reached wide public recognition as an author. His 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly became a best-selling book and led to further opportunities in publishing and television. His follow-up books, including A Cook’s Tour (2001) and The Nasty Bits, also became New York Times bestsellers. Bon Appétit magazine named him Food Writer of the Year in 2001 for Kitchen Confidential.
Building on his books, Bourdain moved into television, hosting a travel-and-food series based on his memoirs. In January 2002 A Cook’s Tour premiered on the Food Network and ran for 35 episodes. Later television projects continued to blend food, culture and travel, and earned him significant recognition; between 2013 and 2016 he received Emmy Awards for Outstanding Informational Series, and in 2014 he was associated with a Peabody Award for work connected to Parts Unknown. In 2012 he was honored with an honorary CLIO Award, and the Culinary Institute of America conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in the Culinary Arts in 2017.
Public profile
Bourdain was widely known for an image that combined rigorous culinary skill with an outsider’s candor about restaurant life. He candidly discussed past struggles, including substance addiction in his younger years, and later quit smoking and gave up drug use. After becoming a father, he made additional lifestyle changes and continued to emphasize physical fitness; he practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu and earned a blue belt in 2015.
His personal life received public attention as well. He married Nancy Putkoski in 1985; that marriage ended in divorce in 2005. In 2007 he married restaurant hostess Ottavia Busia (Ottavia Bourdain); they had a daughter, Ariane Bourdain. The marriage later ended in divorce. In 2017–2018 he had a relationship with Italian actress Asia Argento. He was a father and maintained that parenthood influenced his choices.
Bourdain’s tastes and interests extended beyond the kitchen. He enjoyed reading, listening to music and travelling. He listed macaroni and cheese among favorite comfort foods and expressed a fondness for Mexican cuisine and Vietnam as a travel destination.
Physical characteristics and personal details
He stood about 1.93 meters tall (approximately 6 feet 3 inches) and weighed around 80 kilograms (about 177 pounds). He had dark brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. Raised in a family with Catholic and Jewish influences, he described himself as both vegetarian and non-vegetarian at different times, reflecting a broad and sometimes evolving approach to food.
