Before moving to Mumbai on 4 December 1990 to pursue a career in film, he worked as an engineer in New Delhi for two years.
Career
Sinha began in television working as an assistant director to Pankaj Parashar and made his mark with the Zee TV show Shikast. He went on to direct the UTV series Sea Hawks, completing 72 episodes, and later spent several years directing music videos. His debut as a film director and writer came with Tum Bin in 2001, a romantic drama that is widely regarded as one of his most successful works. He has also produced films, with Cash (2007) listed as his producer debut.
Over the years Sinha has worked across genres, directing films such as Tathastu (2006), Dus (2005), Cash (2007), and Ra.One (2011). From 2018 onward he shifted toward films with a social focus, beginning with Mulk (2018), which starred Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu. That film and the subsequent socially oriented projects Article 15 (2019) and Thappad (2020) marked a deliberate stylistic and thematic transition: while he started out focused on entertainment, he increasingly emphasized communication and social commentary in his storytelling.

He was also a recipient of the Yash Bharti Award from the Uttar Pradesh government in 2016.

He has spoken about being politically aware and reacting to events through his cinema. After Article 15 he noted a practice of reading the Constitution regularly as part of his engagement with the themes he addresses on screen.

Observed personal details in public sources include that he is non-vegetarian, follows Hinduism, and identifies with the Kayastha community.
