Anuj Chaudhary was born on 4 January 1994 in Aliya Nekpur village, Joya block, in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh. He completed primary schooling at a local school in his native village. Described as belonging to the Extremely Backward category, Chaudhary spent his early years in the region and later established his hometown as Asmauli in Sambhal.

Career

Chaudhary entered politics in his early twenties by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After relocating in 2018 to Parsvnath Pratibha Society in Moradabad, he became more actively involved in regional party work and developed connections with several senior BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh.

He contested local elections, standing in the 2021 Asmauli block head race. That contest was decided narrowly; he lost to Santosh Devi by ten votes. Chaudhary also became a member of the Bharatiya Kisan Morcha and participated in the local political network and campaigning in the area leading up to 2023.

Chaudhary was known in local political circles and maintained a public presence that included a reported association with prominent state-level BJP figures. He was married on 25 June 2020 and was the son of Pitam Singh. At the time of his death he was 29 years old.

Death and subsequent investigation

On 10 August 2023, at around 6 pm, Chaudhary was shot outside his flat in the Parsvnath Pratibha Society in Moradabad while walking with a friend. Reports indicate three assailants on a motorcycle opened fire; Chaudhary sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was killed at Tower T-7, flats 401 and 402, within the society.

Police inquiries described the attackers entering the housing complex approximately 20 minutes before the shooting and leaving through a different gate afterward. Security staff on duty at two gates were reported as not having stopped the assailants. Chaudhary had security personnel assigned to him at the time, including a police gunner and two private gunners, but they were not accompanying him during the incident. CCTV footage from the building captured the attack and was used during the investigation.

An FIR was lodged in connection with the killing. Family members alleged the shooting was motivated by political rivalry and named several individuals in their complaint. The case was reported and followed up by local authorities.
