Early life and background

Anup Soni was born on 30 January 1975 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He grew up in a Punjabi business-class family and developed an interest in acting from a young age, performing in plays during his school and college years. He later trained formally in acting at the National School of Drama in New Delhi.

Career

Soni began his screen career in television during the mid-1990s. His early television appearances include an episode of Aahat (1995) followed by roles in series such as Safar (1996), Sea Hawks (1997), Byomkesh Bakshi (1997) and Saaya (1998). In 2004 he appeared as ACP Ajatshashtru in the series CID: Special Bureau.

His film debut came with the 1999 movie Godmother. Over the following years he worked in several Hindi films including Fiza (2000), Raaz (2002) and Gangajal (2003). He has also worked in regional cinema, making his Punjabi film debut with Des Hoya Pardes (2004) and later appearing in Marathi cinema with Fatteshikast (2019), which was released on Zee5. More recent film credits listed include Prasatthanam (2019) and Raat Baaki Hai (2020).

On digital platforms, Soni appeared in the web series The Test Case (2018). He also took roles in high-profile streaming productions: in January 2021 he was seen in the Amazon Prime Video political drama Tandav as Kailash Kumar, and he was part of the Hotstar Special series 1962 - The War in the Hills, released in February 2021.
