Early life and background
Anup Upadhyay was born on 21 May in Ganj Dundawara, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his schooling at Manohar Bhushan Inter College in Bareilly and later attended a university in Allahabad. After finishing his graduation he moved to Delhi, where he began working in theatre alongside playwright Habib Tanvir and spent a decade with the Naya Theatre Group. Those early years established a foundation in stage acting that would shape his approach to performance.

Career
Upadhyay built a long career as a character actor, often appearing in comic roles across theatre, television and film. He worked in theatre for about twenty years and counted plays such as Dekh Rahe Hain Nayan and Agrabazar among his favourites from that period. His screen debut on television came with the sitcom Yes Boss (1999–2009) on SAB TV, where he played the character Sunny. He moved between small-screen work and films, taking early screen roles including a security guard in the 2003 film Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon and appearances in Sehar (2005), Chamku (2008) and Bhootnath (2008).

On television he became a familiar face through a steady stream of supporting and comic characters. From 2006 to 2011 he performed various parts in the SAB TV series F.I.R., and between 2009 and 2014 he portrayed Chhotu Mama in the show Lapataganj. He joined Neeli Chatri Waale as Govardhan Dubey from 2014 to 2016 and in 2015 began playing David Mishra, popularly called Chachaji, on the Hindi comedy series Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! on &TV—one of the roles that brought him broad recognition.

Upadhyay continued to appear regularly in comedy series: he played Mr Hitesh/Peon Chedilal in May I Come In Madam? (2016–2017) on Life OK, and Murarilal Bansal in Jijaji Chhat Par Hai from 2018 to 2020 on SAB TV. His television work in 2020 included the role of Adhbut “Adu” in Excuse Me Maadam on Star Bharat. In 2021 he was seen as Jaldiram Sharma in Jijaji Chhat Par Koii Hai, and in 2023 he appeared in Dancing the Grave as Shradhananda and in the second season of May I Come In Madam?. He has also featured in shows such as Kulvaddhu (2007), Bhootwala Serial (2009), Hum Apke Hai In Laws (2013) and Na Ghar Ka Na Ghat Ka (2010).

Awards and recognition
Upadhyay has received industry recognition for his supporting work. He won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Indian Television Academy Awards in 2018 for Jijaji Chhat Par Hai. In 2019 he received nominations that included Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Indian Television Academy Awards and Best Actor in Comic Role (Male) at the 12th Gold Awards for his performance in Jijaji Chhat Par Hai. He was also the recipient of International Iconic Awards in 2020 and 2021.
