Early life and background

Anupam Mittal was born on 23 December 1971 in Mumbai into a Marwari family. He completed his higher studies with an MBA in Operations and Strategic Management from Boston University. After finishing his MBA he worked in the United States as a product manager at MicroStrategy during the 1990s, a period when the internet was rapidly expanding and reshaping business opportunities.

Career

While working in the US, Mittal experimented with an online matchmaking service. In 1997 he launched an initial effort called sagai.com as a small-scale experiment to bring traditional matchmaking data online. The dot-com crash and subsequent upheaval in the US technology sector prompted him to return to India and focus on turning that experiment into a business.

He relaunched the service as Shaadi.com with an early focus on non-resident Indians seeking partners from their own communities. Shaadi.com grew quickly as users began to find matches through the site, and by the mid-2000s the service had established a significant presence among Indians in the United States and the United Kingdom.

In 2004 Mittal formally created People Group to expand beyond matrimonial services into broader internet and mobile ventures. Under the People Group umbrella he launched or developed other consumer-facing businesses, including Makaan.com, a property portal intended to bridge buyers and sellers, and Mauj (a mobile app launched after the TikTok ban). He has also been involved in film production and has invested in early-stage and growth companies.

As an investor, Mittal has backed more than 40 businesses across a range of sectors. Companies mentioned among his investments include Interactive Avenues, Ola Cabs, Dhruva, Sapiens, Zepo, Betaout, and Truebill, reflecting a diverse portfolio and active role in India’s startup ecosystem.
