Early life and background

Anupam Shyam Saikia, also known as Anupam Shyam Ojha, was born on 20 September 1957 in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He attended G I C Pratapgarh High School and pursued further training at Ram Manhor Lohaia University in Faizabad, the Bhartendu Academy of Dramatic Arts in Lucknow, and the National School of Drama in Delhi, completing his studies there in 1987.

Career

Shyam began his screen career on television, making his TV debut in the series Amaravathi Ki Kathaye in 1992. Over the following decades he built a reputation as a dependable character actor in both television and film. On television he appeared in series such as Amma and Family (1995), Rishtey (Season 3, 2005), Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya (2009), Hum Ne Li Hai - Shapath (2013), Doli Armaano Ki (2014), and Krishna Chali London (2018). His portrayal of Thakur Sajjan Singh in Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya brought him wide recognition on the Star Plus drama.

On the big screen Shyam’s film debut came with Sardari Begum (1996). He went on to appear in a range of Hindi films, including Dastak (1996), Dushman (1998), Satya (1998), Nayak: The Real Hero (2001), Shakti: The Power (2002), Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Raaz – The Mystery Continues (2009), Gandhigiri (2016), Munna Michael (2017), and 706 (2019). He also worked in regional-language cinema, contributing to projects outside the mainstream Hindi film industry.

Public profile

Shyam’s work earned him awards for his television and film performances. Beyond acting, he ran an NGO focused on supporting needy students. He expressed public support for activist Anna Hazare’s movement in December 2011. In 2014 he spoke of an interest in contesting a Lok Sabha seat for the BJP from either Allahabad or Pratapgarh. In 2019 he met the 14th Dalai Lama.

Health and final years

In late July 2020 Shyam was admitted to Lifeline Medicare Hospital in Mumbai due to kidney failure and underwent dialysis at Apex Kidney Care in Malad. His family and industry colleagues sought financial help for his treatment; Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) shared a request for donations and actor Sonu Sood responded to calls for assistance. Shyam’s health struggles continued into 2021. His mother died in July 2021. Anupam Shyam passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on 9 August 2021 at the age of 63. The reported cause of death was multiple organ failure.

After his death, his brother commented publicly about the family’s difficulties and about efforts to secure medical facilities in their hometown. His brother also spoke about discussions the family had pursued concerning improved dialysis provision in Pratapgarh.

Anupam Shyam was married to Shavitri Shyam Ojha of Allahabad. His father was Radheshyam Ojha; his younger brother is Anurag (Anurag Ojha). He hailed from a family with ancestral connections to Raniganj, near the native village of poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
