Early life and background
Anuradha Paudwal was born Alka Nadakarni on 27 October 1954 in Karwar, then part of Bombay State (now in Karnataka). She grew up in Mumbai and attended St. Xavier's College there. Born into a Konkani family, she developed an early fascination with music, crediting the voice of Lata Mangeshkar as a formative influence on her own singing. As a child she suffered a serious bout of pneumonia that affected her voice; listening to recordings during recovery played a role in shaping her vocal style.

At 17 she married composer Arun Paudwal, who became an important mentor and supporter of her musical ambitions. The couple lived in Mumbai; after Arun’s death she established a foundation called Suryauday in his memory.

Career
Anuradha Paudwal’s first break in Hindi cinema came in 1973 when SD Burman gave her a Sanskrit shloka to sing for the film Abhiman. Her early work included a solo in the film Aap Beati and recordings in Marathi films and private albums. Over time she became a prolific playback singer across many Indian languages, including Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya, Punjabi, Assamese and Sanskrit.

Her career gained significant momentum in the 1980s and 1990s. She won her first major film award for the song from Utsav (1984), and later received multiple Filmfare Awards for songs in films such as Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin and Beta. In the mid-1980s she recorded a series of songs with the composer duo Nadeem–Shravan that were later featured in several Mahesh Bhatt films, most notably Aashiqui, which helped raise her profile dramatically.

During the 1990s Paudwal became a frequently chosen voice for leading actresses of the period, including Madhuri Dixit, and sang a number of chart-topping songs. At the height of her commercial success she also began to shift her focus toward devotional music and limited her film work, developing a close professional relationship with T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar and recording many devotional albums.

She is reported to live in a duplex in the Khar neighbourhood of Mumbai. Paudwal lists reading and travelling among her interests and describes spirituality as an important element in her life and music. She has stated she did not receive formal classical training but developed her technique through long practice and listening to recordings she admired.
