Early life and backgroundAnurag Singh Kashyap was born on 10 September 1972 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a household where education was emphasised, he completed a Bachelor of Science degree and attended schools such as Green School in Dehradun and Scindia School in Gwalior before studying at Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. From an early age Kashyap was drawn to cinema; he has said that seeing Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves at a film festival had a major influence on his decision to pursue films.
After finishing college in 1993 he became involved with street theatre and later moved to Mumbai with very limited funds to try to break into the film industry. His early days in the city were difficult, including periods spent on the streets and low‑paid theatre work, but connections made during this time helped him start writing for films.
Career
Kashyap made his directorial debut with the film Paanch, a project that proved controversial and remained unreleased. He first appeared on screen in a cameo in Black Friday, and he has produced films including Udaan (2010). In 2009 he founded his production company, Anurag Kashyap Films Pvt. Ltd. (AKFPL), and has worked across directing, writing, producing and acting roles in numerous projects.
He is known for a filmmaking approach that emphasizes in-depth character research, inventive use of light and color, and occasional guerrilla shooting techniques that allow actors to improvise. These choices helped bring films such as Gangs of Wasseypur to wide attention; that film played at international events including the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, the London Indian Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival.
Kashyap has also acted in a number of films, with credits that include Shagird, Happy New Year, No Smoking, Bhoothnath Returns and Akira. His early collaboration as a writer contributed to the success of the film Satya, which became a significant turning point for him and for collaborators like Manoj Bajpayee.
Awards and recognition
Over his career Kashyap has received several awards and honours. Early recognition included a Screen Award for Best Screenplay, and a Special Jury Award for a short film. His film Black Friday won a Grand Jury Prize, and he has shared story and screenplay awards with collaborators. International recognition came in the form of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) in 2013. He has also received the Yash Bharti Award from the Government of Uttar Pradesh and a Best Actor in a Negative Role award in a South Indian awards ceremony.
