Early life and background

Anurag Maloo was born on 13 June 1988 in Kishangarh, Rajasthan. He grew up in a family headed by his father Om Prakash Maloo, a marble trader, and his mother Pushpa Maloo, a homemaker. He has a younger brother, Aashish Maloo, who is a chartered accountant. Anurag completed his schooling at Maheshwari Public School in Ajmer and Modi Public School in Kota before moving on to higher education in New Delhi.

Anurag earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Information Technology from the University School of Information, Communication and Technology at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. He pursued additional professional and leadership training at institutions including the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, the Commonwealth of Learning, the South East Asia Leadership Academy, and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, where he completed a Basic Mountaineering Course.

Career

Anurag’s early professional experience included roles with NGOs and educational organisations. Between 2009 and 2011 he worked with the North East Centre for Environmental Education and Research in Manipur, and he held internships at the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Career Launcher, Apex SoftWeb, and Opera Campus Crew. During this period he also served as an IBM student ambassador for The Great Mind Challenge and acted as an ambassador for Google Health Speaks.

He taught with the Teach For India Fellowship in Pune from 2011 to 2013 and founded an NGO called The Family of Global Volunteers in January 2012. He later worked with youth and education organisations such as IofC Lmad and InOpen Technologies, and in 2013 was chosen as India’s 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador to represent the country on an international Antarctica expedition.

From 2014 Anurag became closely involved with the startup ecosystem. He joined Techstars in 2014 and served as regional manager for South and Central Asia, taking on additional roles as a global facilitator, community leader and organiser. He held community leadership positions at Techstars Startup Weekend in Seattle and worked with UP Global. Over subsequent years he mentored at The Founder Institute, StartupDigest, Seedstars, the Founder Institute Sri Lanka, Impact Collective and several other incubators and acceleration programmes. His roles at Seedstars included head of partnerships and sales for the Asia-Pacific region and later regional director for the Asia-Pacific region and vice president of Global Partnerships and Business Development.

Alongside his startup work, Anurag pursued mountaineering. He completed climbs including Kang Yatze (6,300 m) and Dzo Jongo (6,250 m) during a Twin Peaks Expedition in Ladakh, summited Mount Kun and Mount Nun in 2022, and climbed Ama Dablam, Imja Tse (Island Peak), and Satopanth. He also won the Bir Billing half marathon in 2021. Motivated to raise awareness for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, he set an ambitious objective to summit all fourteen eight-thousanders and the highest peaks on each continent.

Anurag has combined public speaking and advocacy with his professional work. He has taken part in TEDx events, engaged in youth leadership programmes such as Jagriti Yatra and UNLEASH, and participated in international leadership and fellowship training. He is multilingual, speaking Hindi, English, Marathi and Marwari, and is a travel enthusiast who has visited countries including Switzerland, Egypt, Cambodia and the United States.

Awards and recognition

In February 2014 Anurag received the Karmaveer Chakra Award and the REX Karmaveer Global Fellowship from iCONGO in recognition of his social impact work. He was also a recipient of the CET Merit Annual Scholarship in 2007 for academic performance.

Latest updates

In April 2023 Anurag was seriously injured during a descent from Mount Annapurna. After slipping into a crevasse between Camp III and Camp II, he was declared missing and subsequently rescued on 20 April 2023. Reports indicated he was found deep inside the crevasse, evacuated to Pokhara and admitted to Manipal Hospital in critical condition. Following his rescue, his family received a bill from Nepalese authorities related to the rescue operation and sought assistance from Indian authorities. Prior to this event he had announced plans to attempt Mount Everest in 2023 as part of his Finding My Everest Challenge.

Anurag continues to be identified publicly as a mountaineer, startup mentor, social activist and engineer, with ongoing involvement in leadership and mentoring roles across global startup and social impact communities.
