Anurag Singh Thakur was born on 24 October 1974 in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. Raised in a political family—his father is Prem Kumar Dhumal—Thakur completed his schooling at Dayanand Model School in Jalandhar and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Doaba College, Jalandhar in 1994. He is identified with the Rajput caste and follows Hinduism. His hometown remains Hamirpur, and he is listed as a vegetarian with interests in watching and playing cricket.

Career

Thakur entered national politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He first became a Member of Parliament in a 2008 bypoll to the 14th Lok Sabha from the Hamirpur constituency. He retained the seat in the general elections of 2009, 2014 and 2019, and was again successful in the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Hamirpur, reportedly winning 178,056 votes.

Within the party and parliament, Thakur has held a range of roles. In 2010 he was appointed president of the BJP’s youth wing, the All India Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. In July 2018 he was named chief whip of the BJP for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After the 2019 election he joined the government as Minister of State in the Finance Ministry on 30 May 2019 and later took oath as a Cabinet Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council on 7 July 2021.

Thakur has received parliamentary recognition: he was among the youngest recipients of the Best Young Parliamentarian Award in 2011 and earned the Sansad Ratna Award on 20 January 2019 for his performance as a parliamentarian.

Alongside his political career, Thakur has been active in cricket administration. He served as president of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association and played for Himachal Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy in November 2000. He also played a role in developing an international-level cricket stadium at Dharamshala. In May 2016 he was appointed president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI); his tenure ended after the Supreme Court directed his removal.
