Early life and background

Anush Agarwalla was born on 23 November 1999 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He grew up in a family involved in the warehousing business; his father is Gautam Agarwalla. He attended La Martiniere for Boys in Kolkata through 10th grade, and later studied at The Shri Ram School in New Delhi before completing his schooling via the National Institute of Open Schooling. Agarwalla pursued higher education in Germany, earning a bachelor's degree in Business Economics from Paderborn University.

He became interested in riding as a young child after visiting the Tollygunge Club with his parents. His mother enrolled him in riding lessons around age eight, and he started competing in local events. By his early teens he travelled regularly to New Delhi for training and eventually moved there at 16 to train more consistently at OREA stables.

Career

Agarwalla developed in the dressage discipline, training under coaches including Kapil Modi in India and later Olympian Hubertus Schmidt in Germany. As a teenager he relocated to Germany and rode for clubs there, including RV Altenautal, gaining experience on multiple horses.

He faced setbacks in his early career, missing qualification for the 2018 Asian Games and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and described a challenging period between October 2019 and December 2020 when he failed to qualify for several tournaments. His international breakthrough came in 2022 when he qualified for the World Championships in Herning, Denmark and competed in the Grand Prix Freestyle as part of the World Cup Central European League.

The following year, at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou (2023), Agarwalla achieved historic results for India in equestrian sport. Riding in the team dressage event on Sir Caramello Old, he helped secure a gold medal for the Indian team. Two days later he won a bronze medal in the individual dressage competition riding Etro. These performances made him the first Indian to win an individual equestrian medal at the Asian Games and contributed to India’s first Asian Games equestrian gold in 41 years.

Agarwalla has ridden several horses through his career. Among the mounts he has ridden in Germany were Manni, Loro Piano, Sir Caramello Old (an Oldenburger gelding born in 2007), and Etro (a Westphalian stallion born in 2014). When training in Delhi he rode a horse named Sonntag. He has spoken about forming close bonds with his horses and about small details such as treats: Sir Caramello Old reportedly prefers raspberries while Agarwalla gives apples and carrots.
