Early life and backgroundAjay Prakash Singh was born on 1 July 1972 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a family that later moved to Delhi for further studies, he pursued legal education with the aim of helping people who lacked access to fair treatment and justice. His father, Dr. O. P. Singh, was a police officer; his mother is Vimla Singh. He has a sister, Geeta Singh, who is also an advocate.
Singh completed an LLB from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow and an LL.M. from Delhi University. He later obtained a doctorate in criminology from the University of California. These qualifications preceded his long career at the bar.
Career
Singh began practicing as a trainee in the Supreme Court in 1997 and formally enrolled at the Lucknow Bar Association in 1998. Over the years he has built a reputation as a senior advocate who has represented clients in several high-profile criminal matters across India.
He has been involved in prominent cases including the defence of accused in the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case. His litigation portfolio also includes work on the Sant Rampal matter in 2014, the Sant Ram Rahim case in 2019, and the 2020 Hathras case. Beyond those, he has represented elected representatives such as Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, many MPs and MLAs from Odisha, individuals involved in Naxalite-related matters in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, and figures described as Bahubali leaders.
Early in his career he was present during hearings in the Tantrik Chandraswami matter and later described an ongoing association with that client, including travel. Singh has also held organisational roles within the legal community, including serving as National Secretary General of the BSK Lawyers Federation.
