Aparna Popat Biography

Former India No. 1 badminton player Aparna Popat won multiple national titles, represented India at two Olympic Games and across Commonwealth and World Jr.

Early life and background
Aparna Lalji Popat was born on 18 January 1978 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She grew up in the city and attended J. B. Petit High School before moving to Bangalore to pursue advanced badminton training. Early schooling was followed by a pre-university course at Mount Carmel College, and she later completed a B.Com from the University of Mumbai. Aparna also earned an MBA through distance education from Sikkim Manipal University.

She began playing badminton at age eight at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai. Initially interested in lawn tennis, she shifted focus to badminton after her talent was noticed by coach Anil Pradhan. At 11 she won the national under-12 title, and by her mid-teens she had moved to the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore, where she trained for six years.

Career
Aparna Popat’s international break came at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Silkeborg, Denmark, where she won a silver medal in girls’ singles. She made her senior national breakthrough in 1997 when she won her first Senior National Championship title in Hyderabad. That victory began a remarkable run: Aparna claimed the national women’s singles crown nine consecutive times from 1997 through 2006, equalling and surpassing longstanding national records.

On the international stage she represented India at two Olympic Games, competing in 2000 and 2004 — the first Indian woman badminton player to appear at two Olympics. Aparna also took part in the Asian Games and was a regular on the Commonwealth Games podium. Her Commonwealth Games medals include a silver in women’s singles and a bronze in the women’s team event in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, a bronze in women’s singles in Manchester in 2002, and a bronze in the mixed team event in Melbourne in 2006.

Beyond multi-sport games, her international tournament successes include multiple IBF/International series titles across the late 1990s and early 2000s, and a gold at an Asian Satellite event in 2001. During her competitive years she trained under coaches including Anil Pradhan and benefitted from associations with mentors such as Prakash Padukone.

Injuries and retirement
Aparna’s playing career spanned from roughly 1989 to 2006. A persistent wrist injury that went undiagnosed contributed to her decision to retire from professional badminton in 2006, at which point she was India’s top-ranked female player.

Post-playing career
After retiring, Aparna moved into roles off the court. She worked with Indian Oil Corporation and rose to the position of Executive Director before resigning in 2015. She served as coach for the Mumbai Masters in the inaugural edition of the Premier Badminton League in 2013 and has done badminton commentary for Star Sports.

Aparna has been active within the Olympic and sports community: she served as Executive Director of the Olympians Association of India and, as of 2024, is a member of the General Assembly of the Indian Olympic Association. She was also the sole Indian participant in the 2012 Global Sports Mentoring Programme, an initiative focused on empowering women and girls through sport.

Entrepreneurship and corporate roles
Aparna co-founded a sports performance-focused fitness app startup called All Is Well and serves as its Chief Operating Officer. She is also an Independent Non-Executive Director at Zomato and held a reported salary figure in that capacity as of 2023.

Personal life
Aparna married Rajeev Ved in 2011 and the couple has one daughter. Her parents are Lalji and Heena Popat, and she has an elder sister. Originally a vegetarian for much of her early career, she later adopted a non-vegetarian diet for sporting reasons. Outside badminton she enjoys watching documentaries and reading.

Public profile
Physically, Aparna stands around 5 feet 4 inches (163 cm). She played right-handed and made her international junior debut at the 1996 IBF World Junior Championships. Her nickname “Apu” is associated with her coach Anil Pradhan. Aparna received the Arjuna Award in 2005 in recognition of her contributions to Indian badminton.

Latest updates
As of the most recent information, Aparna remains engaged with sports administration and entrepreneurship, holding roles with the Indian Olympic movement and in the private sector as COO of a sports-tech startup and as an independent director at a major company. She continues to be recognized for her national record run and for being the first Indian woman to compete at two Olympic Games in badminton.
