Apurva Asrani was born on 21 March 1978 in Bangalore, Karnataka. Raised in the city he still lists as his hometown, Asrani attended Baldwin Boys' High School before moving to Mumbai for higher studies. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Jai Hind College.

Asrani's family includes his mother, Menka Asrani, a Bharatanatyam dancer based in Bangalore, and his father, Manohar Asrani, who passed away in January 2023. He has a brother, Rikhil Asrani. Apurva has been open about his sexual orientation and personal life in public forums.
