Early life and background

Apurvi Singh Chandela was born on 4 January 1993 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Raised in a family with sporting connections, she attended Mayo College Girls School and Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ School in Rajasthan before moving to Delhi for higher education. She completed a B.A. (Honours) in Sociology at Jesus and Mary College, University of Delhi.

Her interest in shooting developed during her school years. She began formal training in class 11 while at Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ School and went on to balance college life in Delhi with participation in national competitions. Her family supported her training from an early stage — at one point her parents installed a practice range in their home basement to help her prepare.

Career

Chandela competes in the 10 metre air rifle discipline. She is right-handed, uses her right eye as her master eye, and has worked with several coaches over the years, including Rakesh Manpat, Stanislav Lapidus and national team coach Oleg Mikhailov.

She rose through national ranks to win gold at the Indian Senior National Shooting Championship in 2012 while still in college. Internationally, 2019 was a breakthrough year: she earned gold medals at multiple ISSF World Cup stages and finished 2019 as the world number one in 10 m air rifle. Her other podium finishes include medals at ISSF World Cup stages in 2015 and 2019, a medal at the ISSF World Cup Final in Putian in 2019, and podiums at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018.

Chandela represented India in the 10 m air rifle event at the Tokyo Olympics, the competition held in 2021 after being postponed from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Honours and recognition

Her achievements in the sport have been recognised nationally. She received the Arjuna Award in 2016 and was issued a letter of appreciation by then-President Pranab Mukherjee in July 2014.
