Early life and backgroundAravind Adiga was born on 23 October 1974 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Mangalore, where he completed his early schooling at Canara High School and later at St. Aloysius College. In 1990 his family moved to Australia, and he continued his secondary education at James Ruse Agricultural High School. Adiga went on to study English literature at Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1997, and later pursued an M.Phil. at Magdalen College, Oxford.
Career
Adiga began his professional life in journalism. After his studies he worked as a financial journalist at the Financial Times, covering markets and investment topics. He later served as a South Asia correspondent for Time magazine for three years and also worked as a freelance journalist. Journalism provided him both financial support and material for his fiction writing.
His first novel, The White Tiger, was published in 2008 and brought him international recognition when it won the Man Booker Prize that same year. The book follows the life of Balram, a young man from a poor rural background who becomes entangled in India’s rapidly changing economy. After the Booker win, Adiga published Between the Assassinations, a linked collection of short stories, in 2009.
Adiga continued to publish novels: Last Man in Tower (2011), Selection Day (2016), and Amnesty (2020). Amnesty, which focuses on the experiences of immigrants, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award in 2021. Several of his shorter pieces and stories appeared in prominent publications, including The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Times, and The New Yorker around 2008–2009.
Public profile
The success of The White Tiger brought wide attention. The novel was reported to have sold strongly after winning the Man Booker Prize and was later adapted as a Netflix original film released in January 2021, featuring Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra, and Rajkummar Rao. Adiga has spoken about his literary influences and intentions: he has cited three black American writers of the post–World War II era as influences on The White Tiger and has described his novels as meant to be engaging and provocative rather than formal political treatises.
Adiga has discussed the role of journalism in his development as a novelist, saying that reporting forced him to meet people he would not otherwise encounter and helped him gather material. He has also addressed how winning a major prize affected him, describing the challenge of emerging from the long shadow cast by a successful first book.
