Early life and background

Aravind Kumar was born on 14 July 1962 in Karnataka, India. He is of Kannada ethnicity and follows Hinduism. He completed formal legal studies and began practicing law after passing the Karnataka State Bar Council examination in 1987.

Career

After starting his practice in 1987, Aravind Kumar represented clients in civil courts, magistrate courts and appellate tribunals. He began appearing before the Karnataka High Court in 1991 and later served as an additional standing counsel for the Union government at the Karnataka High Court beginning in 1999.

In 2002 he was appointed a member of the Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committee. The central government named him Additional Solicitor General of India in 2005, and he also served as the Income Tax Department’s standing counsel. He worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation as a special public prosecutor at a later stage of his career.

Aravind Kumar’s judicial career on the bench began when he was appointed an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court on 26 June 2009. He became a permanent judge of that court on 7 December 2012 and served on benches that handled a range of matters, including interim reliefs in high-profile inquiries and public-interest petitions arising during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 13 October 2021 he was elevated to Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, replacing the outgoing chief justice. While leading that court, he heard matters including a suo motu petition related to ragging in an educational institution and directed the Gujarat Education Department to consider steps to curb the problem. During his tenure he also addressed a courtroom dispute about the language to be used for delivering judgement, explaining the High Court’s obligation to use English under the Constitution.

The Government of India appointed him as a judge of the Supreme Court on 10 February 2023; he took the oath on 13 February 2023. His service as a Supreme Court judge is scheduled to continue until his retirement on 13 July 2026.
