Early life and background

Archana Devi was born on 7 September 2004 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in Ratai Purwa in Unnao district. Her early years were marked by hardship: her father died of cancer when she was four, and the family lived in a modest home. Her mother, Savitri Devi, supported the family through field labour and later by selling dairy products after receiving a cow from relatives.

Archana spent much of her childhood playing cricket with her elder brother Budhiman, who was a close supporter of her sporting interest. Tragedy struck in 2017 when Budhiman died from a snakebite while retrieving a ball. The family also faced social prejudice and hostile rumours in their village because of Archana’s participation in cricket and because of the misfortunes that had befallen them.

Archana attended Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Ganj Muradabad, an all‑girls boarding school some distance from her village. Kanpur is about 30 kilometres from her native village; with support from her coach and others she was accommodated in a rented room in J. K. Colony to pursue training. Senior cricketer Kuldeep Yadav also supported Archana by providing a kit and mentoring when he visited Kanpur.

Her competitive career at age‑group level began in 2018 when she represented Uttar Pradesh’s under‑16 team against Assam, taking three wickets in that match. She progressed to Uttar Pradesh’s under‑19 side and featured in national youth tournaments. In 2022 she was named in India C for the Women’s U19 T20 Challenger Trophy and played for India A in the Women’s Quadrangular U19 T20 Series, a tournament India A won.

Archana made her international debut for India’s women’s under‑19 team on 29 November 2022 during New Zealand’s under‑19 tour of India, where she claimed three wickets in that match. She continued to be part of age‑group national squads and was selected for India’s squad for the inaugural ICC Under‑19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.
