Early life and backgroundArif ur Rehman Alvi was born in Karachi on 29 July 1949. He completed his early schooling in Karachi before moving to Lahore for dental studies. Alvi earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from De'Montmorency College of Dentistry in Lahore and later pursued advanced training in the United States, taking postgraduate degrees in prosthodontics at the University of Michigan and in orthodontics at the University of the Pacific in California.
His family has roots in the Indian subcontinent prior to partition. His father, Habib-ur-Rehman Elahi Alvi, practised dentistry and had been associated with political life; he served as a dentist to Jawaharlal Nehru before partition and later became involved with Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan.
Career
After returning from the United States, Alvi practised dentistry in Pakistan and established the Alvi Dental Hospital. He developed a parallel professional career in academic and organizational dentistry: he helped prepare the constitution of the Pakistan Dental Association and went on to serve as its president. He chaired the first Pakistan International Dental Conference and led the 28th Asia Pacific Dental Congress. Alvi served as dean of the Faculty of Orthodontics at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Pakistan, was president of the Asia Pacific Dental Federation in 2006, and in 2007 joined the council of the FDI World Dental Federation. He is also noted as a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Alvi’s political involvement began in student politics at De’Montmorency College, where he was active in the Islami Jamiat Talaba student wing. He entered formal electoral politics in 1979 as a candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami for a Sindh provincial assembly seat, and later contested additional provincial elections in the 1990s and early 2000s. He left Jamaat-e-Islami in 1988 and, in 1996, became one of the founding members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), playing a role in shaping the party’s constitution. Within PTI he served in several senior roles including president of the Sindh chapter, vice president, and secretary general between 2001 and 2013.
In the 2013 general election Alvi was elected to the National Assembly from Karachi as a PTI candidate; he was the sole PTI member to win a National Assembly seat from Karachi that year. He was re-elected to the National Assembly in 2018. Later in 2018 PTI nominated him for the office of president, and on 4 September 2018 he was elected as the 13th President of Pakistan, winning 353 votes in the presidential election.
