Early life and background

Arindam Bagchi was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, and grew up with an academic bent that led him to study mathematics at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. After completing his undergraduate degree, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He attended Delhi Public School for his earlier schooling.

Career

Bagchi joined the Indian Foreign Service in the 1995 batch and has held a succession of diplomatic and policy posts since then. Early overseas assignments included service at the Embassy of India in Madrid, where he worked as Third Secretary and then Second Secretary in the late 1990s. He subsequently served at the Embassy of India in Lima, Peru, as Second Secretary and First Secretary around the turn of the century.

Returning to New Delhi in 2004, Bagchi took on responsibilities as a Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs. He later represented India at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, serving as First Secretary and Counsellor for about three years beginning in 2007. On his return to India in 2010, he was appointed Director at the Prime Minister’s Office, a role that placed him at the centre of national policymaking.

In mid-2014 Bagchi moved back overseas as Deputy High Commissioner at the High Commission of India in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was named Ambassador of India to Croatia in November 2018 and during his posting in Zagreb engaged with events such as the Croatia Grand Chess Tour in which Indian grandmaster Viswanathan Anand participated.

In June 2020 he was appointed Joint Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs. Less than a year later, on 14 March 2021, he took up the role of Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, becoming the public face of India’s foreign ministry for media interactions and official statements.

As MEA Spokesperson, Bagchi has regularly briefed the press and articulated India’s positions on sensitive international matters. In April 2022, when a visiting U.S. congresswoman travelled to the Pakistan-administered part of Kashmir, Bagchi publicly criticized the visit and described it as a violation of India’s territorial integrity, reflecting the line taken by the ministry on that particular episode.
