Arjun Singh Cheema was born on 13 June 2001 in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab. Raised in a family with sporting connections, he attended Om Parkash Bansal Model School in his hometown. Several relatives have athletic backgrounds: his grandfather Sardar Balwinder Singh played football for India, and his uncle Jagwinder Singh Cheema holds an Asian junior powerlifting record. Cheema’s family supported his early steps in sport — he has said his father accompanied him to his national tournaments.

Career

Cheema began his professional shooting career under the guidance of coaches Joshi Parvez and Kumar Holinder, with national coaching from Jaspal Rana. He specializes in the 10m air pistol discipline and also competes in 50m pistol events.

As a junior shooter he collected multiple medals on the international circuit. In 2018 he secured gold at the World Championships in the 50m pistol junior event in Changwon, won two junior World Cup golds in Suhl and Sydney, and added a bronze in the 10m air pistol junior event at the World Championships. That same year he took silver at the Asian Championships in the 10m air pistol junior category. The following year he continued to succeed at the junior level, winning two gold medals at the 52nd ISSF World Championship Junior Men’s 50m Pistol in Korea and earning a bronze at the Asian Championships in the 50m pistol event in Doha.

Cheema has also performed well as he transitioned into senior competition. In 2021 he was part of a 50m pistol trio that posted a combined 549 out of 600 points. He won the national men’s 50m pistol selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in 2022. On the continental stage he was a member of India’s 10m air pistol team that won gold at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. Alongside teammates Sarabjot Singh and Shiva Narwal, the Indian team topped the standings; in the individual ranking at that event Cheema finished eighth with a score of 578 and 19 bullseyes.
