Early life and backgroundArkady Arkadyevich Babchenko was born on 18 March 1977 in Moscow, then part of the Russian SFSR in the USSR. He completed his schooling at School 465 in Moscow and later earned a Bachelor of Law from the Modern University for the Humanities. At age 18 he was drafted into the Russian armed forces, serving in communications units in the North Caucasus and taking part in the First Chechen War. He also volunteered during the Second Chechen War for a six-month period.
Career
After leaving military service in 2000, Babchenko transitioned into journalism. He worked as a war correspondent for outlets including Moskovskiy Komsomolets and Zabytyi Polk, and later joined Novaya Gazeta in January 2009. His reporting covered conflict zones; he was also involved in coverage of the 2008 South Ossetia war. Alongside his journalism, Babchenko has authored memoirs drawing on his wartime experiences, most notably One Soldier’s War.
He has worked on projects and with organizations connected to human-rights and journalistic initiatives, including participation in a project titled Journalists Without Middlemen and collaboration with the Mother’s Right Foundation, a Russian human-rights NGO.
