Early life and backgroundArnab Ranjan Goswami was born on 9 October 1973 in Guwahati, Assam. He grew up in a family with roots in Assam’s Barpeta district; the family later lived in Shillong before settling in Guwahati. His father served in the Indian Army, and that led to a childhood spent moving between different cities. Goswami’s household includes a sister who works in the Indian defence services.
He attended Mount St. Mary's School in Delhi Cantonment and Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jabalpur Cantonment. For higher education he studied at Hindu College, University of Delhi, where he completed a degree in sociology, and later pursued a master’s degree in social anthropology at Oxford University. His early interest in public speaking and debate began while he was in school.
Career
Goswami began his journalistic career in the early 1990s with The Telegraph newspaper in Kolkata. He moved to television in 1995 when he joined NDTV as a news broadcaster and rose to the position of news editor within a few years. Over time he worked as an anchor on other platforms including DD Metro and Star News.
In 2002 he authored a book titled Combating Terrorism: The Legal Challenge. He earned recognition as a television presenter, receiving the Asian Television Award for Best Presenter or Anchor in 2003 and other honors such as the Society Young Achievers Award in 2007, Assamese of the Year by News Live in 2010, and the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism (TV) in 2010.
In November 2016 Goswami announced his departure from Times Now to launch his own news venture. On 6 May 2017 he launched Republic TV, an English-language news channel. Republic TV was the first news channel in India to stream live on Hotstar and reached a leading position in the English news genre shortly after its launch.

In November 2020 he was arrested by Raigad and Mumbai police in connection with an abetment to suicide case; he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on 11 November 2020. The arrest and subsequent legal proceedings attracted widespread attention.
Personal life
Goswami is married to Samyabrata Ray Goswami, also known as Pipi Goswami, and the couple have two children. He follows Hinduism and comes from an Assamese Brahmin family. His grandfather, Rajani Kanta Goswami, was a judge and active in the Indian National Congress, and his uncle Dinesh Goswami served as union law minister in the Vishwanath Pratap Singh government. Goswami lists the late Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika among his inspirations.
He is reported to be non-vegetarian. Outside work he enjoys reading, travelling, and watching movies.
