Arun Sao was born on 25 November 1968 in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Govt SNG College in Mungeli and went on to earn an LLB from Kaushalendra Rao Law College in Bilaspur. After finishing his legal studies, Sao practised law and built a career in the Chhattisgarh legal system.

Sao comes from a family with a history of engagement in public life. His father, Abhay Ram Sao, was associated with the Jan Sangh and volunteered with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Arun Sao is married to Meena Sao and the couple have a son, Amish Sao.

Career

Arun Sao’s public life began in student and youth politics. He joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1990 and moved into the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 1996. Within the BJYM he served in organisational roles including general secretary and district president, and by 2000 he was state president of the youth wing. He also worked with the student wing of the RSS during these years.

Parallel to his political activities, Sao pursued a legal career. After completing his education he practised law in the high court. He served as a panel lawyer for the Government of Chhattisgarh from 2004 until 2013 and was appointed deputy advocate general of the Chhattisgarh High Court, a post he held from 2013 to 2018.

Sao’s electoral and party career continued to advance. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019 representing the Bilaspur constituency. In August 2022 he became the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh. In November 2023 he won election to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly from the Lormi constituency. In December 2023 he resigned his assembly seat to take office as Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.
