Early life and background

Arun Yogiraj was born in Mysore, Karnataka, in 1983 into a family that has practised sculpture for multiple generations. His paternal lineage includes well-known sculptors; his father, B.S. Yogiraj Shilpi, and grandfather, Basavanna Shilpi, were both active in the craft. Arun grew up in an environment steeped in traditional stone and bronze work and later completed an MBA at Mysore University before turning full-time to sculpture.

Career

Yogiraj began his formal career as a sculptor in 2008 after a brief period working as an HR trainee in the private sector. He went on to produce a steady body of public monuments and religious icons, often working with teams of assistants on large commissions.

Among his large-scale works are a 30-foot statue of Subhash Chandra Bose installed near India Gate in New Delhi, completed with the support of a large team and finished as part of national commemorations in 2022. He also led the creation of a 12-foot, 35-tonne statue of Adi Shankaracharya for Kedarnath, crafted from Chlorite Schist to withstand severe weather and completed in 2021. For Mysore, his public works include a 10-foot marble statue of the late King Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, a 15-foot sculpture of B.R. Ambedkar, a white statue of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and a 21-foot monolithic Hoysala-style Hanuman at Chunchanakatte.

Yogiraj has also produced smaller, culturally resonant pieces: a life-size depiction of The Common Man by cartoonist R.K. Laxman for exhibition at the Malgudi Museum in Shivamogga, a five-foot idol of Garuda for Mysore, and several statues of Hindu deities, including Nandi and Banashankari Devi.

In 2023 the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust selected a sculpture by Yogiraj, titled Ram Lalla, for installation at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The chosen idol, carved from Krishna Shila stone from the Mysore region, was sculpted to represent a five-year-old and involved months of study, visualization and more than half a year of hands-on carving. The installation of this idol in January 2024 brought Yogiraj wide public recognition.

Technique, commissions and international work

Yogiraj works across media and scales, using marble, granite, chlorite schist and fibre as project needs demand. He has led teams of sculptors on monumental projects and has been willing to postpone overseas offers to fulfil important domestic commissions. Beyond India, he has received commissions from patrons in countries including the Netherlands, the United States, Australia, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and Germany.

He has been active in sculpture camps at state and national levels and runs workshops teaching traditional sculpting techniques. For a period he co-managed a sculpture school in Mysore, Kasyap Shilpa Kalanikethana, alongside his father.

Public profile

Yogiraj has received multiple honours and awards over his career, including the South Zone Young Talented Artist Award from the Government of India in 2014, the Nalwadi Award in 2020 from the Mysore District Administration, honorary membership of The Crafts Council of Karnataka in 2021, and recognition from local authorities and arts organizations such as the Sculptors Association and the AmaraShilpi Jakanacharya Trust. He has been publicly acknowledged by political and civic leaders for several of his commissioned works.

Personal life

Arun Yogiraj is married to Vijetha Mohan and is a father to a son and a daughter. His immediate family includes his mother Saraswathi and siblings Suryaprakash, an elder brother who is also a sculptor, and an elder sister, Chetana. His father, B.S. Yogiraj Shilpi, who was a noted sculptor and award recipient, died in 2021 while Arun was engaged on a national commission.
