Early life and background

Arvind Kejriwal was born on 16 August 1968 in Siwani, a town in Bhiwani district, Haryana. He grew up in that region and attended schools in Hisar and Sonipat before going on to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, where he graduated in mechanical engineering. Kejriwal comes from a Vaishya (Baniya) family and follows Hinduism. He is a vegetarian, practices yoga and vipassana, and lists reading and watching films among his hobbies.

Career

After completing his engineering degree, Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Service and served as an IRS officer. He later resigned from the service in 2006 to focus on social work. His early public profile was shaped by anti-corruption activism; he participated in the India Against Corruption movement in 2011 and worked closely with civil society figures in campaigns that sought stronger accountability measures.

In November 2012 Kejriwal launched the Aam Aadmi Party. The party quickly made an impact in Delhi politics. In the 2013 Delhi Assembly election he defeated a long-standing opponent in the New Delhi constituency and, later that year on 28 December 2013, became Chief Minister of Delhi for the first time.

Kejriwal contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Varanasi but was defeated by a wide margin. He returned to lead the Delhi government with a commanding mandate in the February 2015 assembly elections, when his party won 67 of 70 seats and he became Chief Minister for a second term. He was sworn in as Chief Minister for a third time at a large public ceremony at Ramlila Maidan. In September 2021 he was elected national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party for a third term. On 17 September 2024 he resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Delhi.
