Early life and background

Arvind Singh Mewar was born on 13 December 1944 in Udaipur, in the former Kingdom of Mewar. He grew up in the City Palace surroundings and completed Senior Cambridge education at Mayo College, Ajmer, in 1961. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, Economics and Political Science from Maharana Bhupal College in 1965 and later completed hotel management studies at Metropolitan College in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England.

He came from the ruling family of Udaipur: his father was Bhagwat Singh Mewar and his mother was Princess Sushila Kumari of Bikaner. He was one of three siblings, including his elder brother Mahendra Singh Mewar and sister Yogeshwari Kumari. In 1972 he married Vijayaraj Kumari and the couple had three children: a son, Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, and two daughters, Bhargavi Kumari and Padmaja Kumari.

Career

After finishing hotel management training in England, Arvind spent time gaining practical hospitality experience in Chicago. He returned to India and served in several capacities in the family’s hospitality ventures. He was chairman and managing director of the HRH Group of Hotels, the commercial wing associated with the House of Mewar and known for operating heritage palace hotels and resorts.

In the early 1980s he worked as his father’s personal secretary and as general manager of the Lake Palace Hotel, Udaipur. Over decades he oversaw the development and management of museum and cultural projects linked to the House of Mewar, including the City Palace Museum, the Maharana Mewar Special Library and the Maharana Mewar Research Institute. Under his leadership, multiple charitable trusts connected to the family undertook development projects in and around Udaipur.

Arvind combined business interests with cultural stewardship. He led the Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation as chairman and managing trustee and guided the Trusts’ publications and educational activities. The HRH Group of Hotels remained the principal commercial enterprise of the House of Mewar during his tenure, offering heritage stays, curated collections and palace experiences.

Public life, memberships and interests

He was widely active in civic, heritage and travel organisations. His roles included membership of the World Travel and Tourism Council and participation on advisory boards such as the Rajasthan Foundation and the National Advisory Board of the Jaipur Virasat Foundation. He held honorary and patron roles at heritage and cultural festivals and served on boards or as a trustee for several foundations and institutions focused on art, culture and education.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Arvind had a strong cricketing background: he captained school and university cricket teams, played in Ranji Trophy matches alongside his father, and led district and state-level teams to regional trophies. He helped establish the Cricket Institute of Udaipur and was associated with multiple cricket organisations. Later in life he took up microlight aviation as a sport, earned a pilot licence, and supported the Wings of India Microlite Aircraft Expedition that highlighted Shikarbadi Airport internationally.

He collected antiques, crystals and vintage cars, and maintained them at the palace complex where the public could view parts of the collection. He enjoyed travelling and horse riding and supported equestrian and polo institutions both locally and abroad.

Awards and recognition

Across his career he was recognised with several honours for contributions to tourism, culture and travel. Among the awards listed in his career are honours from travel and industry bodies and lifetime achievement recognitions that acknowledged his work promoting heritage hospitality and cultural preservation.

Family matters and succession

Following the death of his father, disputes over leadership and property emerged within the family. A will published in 1984 named Arvind executor and led to differing claims among descendants, with his brother later being declared Maharana by another claimant. In 2020, a court ordered that the family property be divided equally among Arvind, Mahendra and Yogeshwari.

Public profile

Arvind maintained a visible public presence as custodian of Mewar’s cultural legacy. He represented the family in tourism and heritage forums, appeared on magazine covers and took part in cultural festivals. He was known for blending custodial duties with commercial hospitality initiatives and for steering charitable and educational projects tied to the House of Mewar.

Later years and death

Arvind remained active into later life but experienced ill health in his final years. He was receiving treatment at his residence, the City Palace in Udaipur, and died there on 16 March 2025 of age-related illness.
