Arvind Swami was born on 18 June 1970 in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in Chennai. He attended Sishya School and Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai before studying at Loyola College. He completed a B.Com and went on to earn a master’s degree in International Business while spending time in North Carolina.

He originally considered a medical career during his school years. While in college he did some modelling work for extra income; one of those assignments brought him to the attention of filmmaker Mani Ratnam, which opened the door to a film career.

Arvind Swami made his feature-film debut in Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi (1991). Early in his career he established a reputation for strong dramatic work, earning wide recognition for roles in Roja and Bombay. He has worked across South Indian film industries and in Hindi cinema, with debut appearances listed for Malayalam (Daddy, 1992), Telugu (Mounam, 1995) and Hindi (Saat Rang Ke Sapne, 1998) films.

In the mid-1990s he provided the Tamil voice for the adult Simba in the local version of Disney’s The Lion King and later dubbed for Scar in the film’s 2019 digital remake. After appearing in films such as Minsara Kanavu (1997), which won multiple national awards, he largely stepped back from acting around 2000 following a cameo in Alaipayuthey. During that period he turned his attention to business activities, working with VD Swamy and Company in international trade and commerce and launching Talent Maximus, a company focused on payroll processing and temporary staffing in India.

He suffered a serious accident that resulted in a spinal injury and forced an extended break from work; he later recovered and returned to acting. Arvind re-emerged on screen in the 2010s and expanded into television presenting, hosting the third season of the game show Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi in 2012.

A notable career resurgence came with his portrayal of Dr. Siddharth Abimanyu in Thani Oruvan (2015), a performance that brought critical acclaim and several awards, including a Filmfare Award (Tamil) for Best Supporting Actor and recognition from Ananda Vikatan and IIFA Utsavam in 2016 for his negative-role performance.
