Asha Bhosle Biography

Asha Bhosle was an Indian playback singer whose career spanned decades and thousands of recordings. Celebrated for her versatility, she won numerous awards

Early life and background

Asha Bhosle was born on 8 September 1933 in Sangli, Sangli State, in what was then British India. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was an actor and classical singer who also served as her early music teacher. Asha grew up in a musical household alongside her sisters Lata and Usha Mangeshkar and brothers including Hridayanath Mangeshkar. The family’s musical environment shaped her early interest in singing.

She began performing as a child. Her first recorded work in Marathi dates to 1943 with the song "Chala Chala Nav Bala" for the film Majha Bal. Her Hindi film debut as a playback singer came in 1948 with the song "Saawan Aaya" for the Marathi film Chunariya, marking the start of a long career in Indian cinema.

Career

Asha Bhosle developed a reputation for range and adaptability, becoming one of India’s most prolific playback singers. Over her career she recorded an immense catalogue of songs—credited with singing over 12,000 recordings—and worked with many leading composers and performers of her era.

She rose to wider public recognition in the 1950s, notably after singing "Nanhe Munne Bachche" for the 1954 film Boot Polish. Composer O. P. Nayyar played an important role in shaping her early identity as a playback artist, first collaborating with her in 1952. Later she developed a close professional and personal relationship with Rahul Dev Burman, known professionally as R. D. Burman; the two worked together frequently and married in 1980.

Throughout the 1960s, 70s and beyond Asha recorded many songs that became iconic in Hindi cinema. Her Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards recognized standout tracks from films such as Dus Lakh, Shikar, Caravan, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Naina, Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye and Don. She also received a Filmfare Special Award in 1996 and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

Asha’s performances were repeatedly honored at the national level. She won National Film Awards for songs in Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijaazat (1986), and in 2000 she was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The Government of India conferred the Padma Vibhushan on her in 2008. In 2011 she was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history.

In later years she diversified her work. She received the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2023, and in 2013 made a screen acting debut in the Marathi film Mai, playing the role of a mother. She also mentored family members in music, training her granddaughter Zanai who debuted in the same Marathi film.

Public profile

Asha’s personal life was closely tied to the world of music. She married Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949; that marriage ended in separation in 1960. She later married music director R. D. Burman in 1980 and remained married to him until his death in 1994. Her children include Hemant Bhosle, Varsha Bhosle and Anand Bhosle. Hemant died of cancer in 2015. Varsha, who worked as a columnist, died by suicide in 2012. Anand has managed aspects of Asha’s career and her grandson Chaitanya Bhosle has worked as a musician.

Outside music she ran restaurants in Dubai, Kuwait and Manchester, and she enjoyed cooking. Her favourites reportedly included fish and chips, and she cited a range of vocal influences from Indian and international singers.

Later years and death

Asha Bhosle continued to be a recognized figure in Indian music into her later years. She was hospitalised at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on 11 April 2026 for exhaustion and a pulmonary chest infection. She died at the hospital on 12 April 2026 from multiple organ failure that followed a cardiac arrest. She was 92 years old at the time of her death.
