Early life and background

Asha Kiran Barla was born on 1 October 2006 in the village of Navadih, block Kandara, in Gumla district, Jharkhand. Asha has an elder sister, Florence (also an athlete), and an elder brother who plays prize-money hockey tournaments and works as a daily wage labourer.

As a child she played hockey and football before a schoolteacher recommended she try athletics, which led her to focus on middle-distance running.

Career

Asha Kiran Barla established herself early in regional athletics. In 2017 she won the under-14 girls 600m race at the National Inter-district Championships in Jharkhand. The following year she earned her first medal at the East Zone Junior Athletics Championships in Patna.

Her breakthrough on the national and international junior circuit came in 2022. That year she won gold in the 800m at the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships in Kuwait and secured gold at the Junior National Athletics Championships in Guwahati. In June 2022 she added another 800m title at the U20 Federation Cup Championships held in Nadiad, Gujarat.
