Asheesh Singh (IAS) Biography

Asheesh Singh is a 2010-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre who served as Municipal Commissioner of Indore Municipal Co

Early life and background

Asheesh Singh was born on 29 November 1984 in Kherwa Village in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in the same hometown and later attended CSJM University, Kanpur, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree. Singh is Indian by nationality and follows Hinduism. His stated interests include reading ghazals and shayari and playing tennis.

Career

Singh joined the Indian Administrative Service as a member of the 2010 batch and was allotted to the Madhya Pradesh cadre. Over the course of his administrative career he has held a number of municipal and district-level posts in the state.

In 2016 he was posted as Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Panchayat in Indore. He has also served as Additional Municipal Commissioner of Ujjain. In May 2018 he was appointed Municipal Commissioner of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), a role in which he led several high-profile sanitation and urban-management initiatives.

While serving in Indore, Singh oversaw an intensive campaign to clear a large municipal dumpsite, directing municipal teams and rented machinery to accelerate the work. Under his supervision the civic body removed a reported 13 lakh tonnes of garbage in approximately six months. Singh’s team completed that task within a budget reported at Rs 10 crore, contrasting with prior arrangements in which private contractors had been engaged at higher per-unit costs. As part of the broader campaign, the municipal programme introduced mechanised segregation of wet and dry waste, banned polythenes for road construction, and promoted alternatives such as khadi bags.

To reduce single-use plastics, Singh’s office also launched local schemes to change citizen behaviour. Bartan Bhandar made reusable utensils available for events to limit disposable plates and cups, while the Jhola Yojna distributed khadi bags to discourage use of plastic shopping bags. During his tenure Indore retained top rankings in the national Swachh Bharat Abhiyan city cleanliness assessments, with the city recognised as the cleanest in India for the third consecutive time in 2019.

Singh described a hands-on approach to municipal management, beginning morning field rounds around 6:30 a.m. and continuing for several hours to monitor cleaning, water supply, SMART City projects, AMRUT, PMAY and other construction activities. He has noted that many essential services require early, on-the-ground supervision to be effective.

Public profile

Singh’s work in Indore brought him national attention for the scale and speed of the city’s waste-clearing efforts. He discussed his projects publicly and appeared alongside sanitation leaders on national platforms; notably, on 2 October 2019 he appeared on the television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati with Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International.

Personal life

Asheesh Singh is married to Katha Kartiki; the couple wed on 3 May 2014. Information about his children and the names of his parents were not provided in the available profile.

Latest updates

As of the information available, Singh had been serving as Municipal Commissioner of the Indore Municipal Corporation and was credited with leading the city’s concentrated sanitation drive that cleared 13 lakh tonnes of waste in a six-month period. His administrative approach combined mechanisation, citizen-facing schemes, and restrictions on problematic plastic use to sustain cleanliness gains in Indore.
