Early life and background

Ashish Kumar Chauhan was born on 16 March 1967 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He attended Diwan Ballubhai Madhyamik School in Paldi, Ahmedabad. Chauhan completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and later earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management. He studied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.

Career

Chauhan began his professional journey after graduating when he joined the Industrial Development Bank of India in 1991. Two years later he moved to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) where he served in a vice-president role. During his time at NSE he worked on trading infrastructure and technology initiatives, including the creation of telecom and clearing/depository concepts that supported modern market operations.

In 2001 Chauhan left NSE to join exchangenext.com, a company financed by the Reliance group, and went on to hold senior technology and leadership positions within the group. He became chief information officer at Reliance Infocomm and later served as Reliance Group CIO. He was also named CEO of the Mumbai Indians cricket franchise in 2001.

Chauhan joined the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in 2009 as deputy CEO and was elevated to CEO in 2012. At BSE he led efforts to modernize the exchange: improving execution speed, launching mobile trading, introducing several derivative products and commodities, and establishing a small- and medium-enterprise listing platform. He also oversaw the creation of a mutual fund distribution platform that later became India’s largest digital mutual fund distribution network by 2018.

Under his leadership BSE completed a long-pending initial public offering in January 2017 and Chauhan was involved in establishing India International Exchange, an international exchange inaugurated in 2017.

Beyond exchange leadership, Chauhan has held a variety of governance, advisory and representative roles. He has served as chairperson of the Board of Governors of NIT Manipur, director of the ICSI Insolvency Professionals Agency, and chairman of the South Asian Federation of Exchanges. He has been a member of a Securities and Exchange Board of India committee on corporate governance and has advised bodies such as the Asia-Pacific Investment Council and the Central Board of Direct Taxes. He has also been associated with governance at academic institutions, including membership of the governing council of IIM Raipur.
